Barcelona Zoo

Barcelona Zoo: The dolphin shows are the big draw, but the decently sized zoo has plenty of other animals, all of whom look happy enough in reasonably spacious enclosures and the city's comfortable climate. Favourites include giant hippos, the prehistoric-looking rhino, sea lions, elephants, giraffes, lions and tigers. Child-friendly features include a farmyard zoo, pony rides, picnic areas and two excellent playgrounds. If all that walking is too much, there's a zoo 'train'.

Bear in mind that on hot days many of the animals in the Barcelona Zoo are sleeping and out of sight, and when the temperature drops below 13º many are kept inside.

Barcelona Tibidabo Funfair

Barcelona Tibidabo Funfair: This hilltop fairground, dating from 1889, is investing millions in getting itself bang up to date, with the terrifying freefall Pendulum and a hot-air balloon style ride for smaller children. Adrenalin freaks are waiting for the rollercoaster currently under construction.

The many other attractions at Barcelona Tibidabo Funfair  include a house of horrors, bumper cars and the emblematic Avió, the world's first popular flight simulator when it was built in 1928. Don't miss the antique mechanical puppets and contraptions at the Museu d'Autòmats, and there are hourly puppet shows at the Marionetàrium (from 1pm). At the weekends, at Barcelona Tibidabo Funfair there are circus parades at the end of the day and, in summer, correfocs (fire runs) and street theatre.

Barcelona Temple Romà d'Augusti

Barcelona Temple Romà d'Augusti: Four stunning fluted Corinthian columns dating from the first century BC soar out of their podium in the most unlikely of places: a back patio of the Mountaineering Centre of Catalonia.

Part of the rear corner of the Barcelona Temple Romà d'Augusti devoted to the Roman emperor Augustus (who after his death was elevated to the pantheon), the columns were discovered and isolated from the structure of a medieval building in 1835.

The current layout of the Barcelona Temple Romà d'Augusti is actually a slight fudging of the original as the right-hand column resided separately in the Plaça del Rei until it was slotted next to the other three in 1956. Opening hours can vary, so, call ahead.
