Barcelona Ajuntament (City Hall)

Around the left-hand corner of the Barcelona city hall's rather dull 18th-century neo-classical façade sits the old entrance, in a wonderfully flamboyant 15th-century Catalan Gothic façade. Inside Barcelona city hall, the building's centrepiece (and oldest part) is the famous Saló de Cent, where the Consell de Cent (Council of One Hundred) ruled the city between 1372 and 1714.

The Saló de Cròniques of Barcelona city hall is filled with Josep Maria Sert's immense black-and-gold mural (1928), depicting the early 14th-century Catalan campaign in Byzantium and Greece under the command of Roger de Flor. Full of art and sculptures by the great Catalan masters from Clarà to Subirachs, the interior of the Barcelona city hall is open for guided tours (in different languages) on Sundays.
