Barcelona Fundación Alorda Derksen

A garden furniture mogul might seem at first glance to be an unlikely art collector but Manuel Alorda and his wife Hanneke Derksen proved that there is no conflict between decking and painting when they opened this impressive gallery, Fundación Alorda Derksen, dedicated to 21st-century art, in April 2008.

Some pieces in the inaugural exhibition of the Fundación Alorda Derksen come from their own collection but as a patron of Tate Modern and the MACBA, Alorda's connections allowed him to borrow high-profile works of art that have never before been seen in Barcelona. The 24 large-scale pieces include part of Damien Hirst's Butterfly series, the Spots series and hyperrealist works themed on the birth of Hirst's son, in Fundación Alorda Derksen. Catalan conceptual artist Jaume Plensa's body sculpture of metal letter 'cells' also impresses as does Anselm Kiefer's colossal naval-themed piece, Die Grosse Fracht, at Fundación Alorda Derksen.
